PRESS RELEASE

HIV, the virus if left untreated causes AIDS, is easy to detect.  A simple test on oral fluids can quickly determine if a person has HIV.  Each year, one day is identified as National HIV Testing Day.  This year it is June 27th.  New testing procedures can collect oral fluids and provide results in as little as 20 minutes.

Who should get tested?  Anyone with substantial risk.  Those at highest risk include people who have ever shared needles, have unprotected sex with multiple partners, mix drugs or alcohol and sex, have been diagnosed with more than one STD, and men who have sex with other men.

Why should you be tested?  There are many reasons including; getting into treatment sooner, protecting your partners, and simply to know your HIV status.  This year the theme for National HIV Testing Day is “Take the Test, Take Control”.  Are you ready to take control?  If so, call the DeKalb County Health Department at 815-748-2467 and make an appointment to get tested.

HIV testing at DeKalb County Health Department is free and can be done anonymously.  Take a few minutes, take control and get tested.
