Frequently Asked Questions

Q: In an emergency, why would DeKalb County Health Department need volunteers?

The DeKalb County Health Department has developed an emergency preparedness plan specific to a public health emergency that would require a volunteer force to help the Health Department in dispensing medication to county residents.

Q: How much time and training is involved?

Time:  There is no specific time commitment. Volunteering is optional and a personal choice that is made with family in mind. A registered volunteer is not obligated to volunteer. A variety of volunteer hours will be needed at the time of an emergency.

Training:  Most job responsibilities do not require previous training. Most positions can be trained on-site. Most of the information a volunteer will need will be provided through newsletters and informational websites that a volunteer can read or access on their own time.

Q: What kind of public health emergencies will volunteers respond to?

As a registered Volunteer Responder with DeKalb County Health Department, volunteers may be called to assist public health officials with the dispensing of medication.

Q: If I volunteer, who will take care of my family?

Volunteering is optional and a choice you need to make with your family in mind. Whether you choose to volunteer or not, it is important to develop an emergency preparedness plan for your family. See brochure or go to www.ready.gov

Q: How will volunteers be called into action?

The VR coordinator/designee will contact the Volunteer Responders using the information they provided during registration. If the volunteer is willing and able to respond, they will be provided instructions on where to report.

Q: Are Volunteer Responders part of the Emergency Response Team?

Yes, volunteers are an essential part of the Emergency Response Team.

In an event of a disease outbreak, volunteer responders and their family members will be among the first to receive preventive medication.
